Although pharmacological treatments are highly effective in resolving nocturnal enuresis, minor adjustments in the patient's daily habits accelerate the recovery process and shorten the duration of medication use. Providing a personalized lifestyle guide to patients plays a significant role in the treatment process. In this guide, practical information on lifestyle and dietary recommendations for patients with nocturnal enuresis is presented.
1. Evening Fluid Consumption Protocol
Fluid intake should be spread throughout the day. Approximately 70% of the daily required water intake should be consumed by the afternoon, and fluid intake should be minimized after 7:00 PM. Specifically, fluid intake should be completely stopped during the last 2 hours before bedtime.
2. Foods and Beverages that Stimulate the Bladder
The following foods stimulate the bladder muscles, making bedwetting easier, and should therefore be excluded from the evening diet:
- Caffeinated Beverages: Coffee, cola, and brewed teas. They accelerate renal filtration at night.
- Alcohol: Deepens sleep, prevents the bladder fullness signal from reaching the brain, and increases urine output.
- Salty and Highly Spiced Dinners: Create a feeling of thirst in the body, leading to excessive water consumption at night.
3. Regular Constipation Control
A full rectum (the end of the intestine) presses on the bladder located right in front of it, reducing bladder capacity. Therefore, preventing constipation with a high-fiber diet is highly effective in reducing nighttime bedwetting.
