How is the Interstim Procedure Performed?
The procedure is typically performed in two stages. We start with a test phase to verify if the patient will respond to the therapy, followed by the permanent implantation of the device.
- The Test Phase: A thin lead (electrode) is placed near the sacral nerve and connected to an external stimulator. We monitor the improvement in symptoms over a 1-2 week trial period.
- Permanent Implantation: Once success is confirmed during the test, the permanent battery is implanted under the skin in the buttock area during a minor surgical procedure.
What is the Battery Life of the Bladder Pacemaker?
Based on my clinical experience, modern neurostimulation technology is highly efficient. Depending on the settings and usage, the battery life typically lasts between 5 and 10 years. Replacing a depleted battery is a straightforward procedure performed under local anesthesia.
