Penile implant surgery is a highly organized urological procedure. Understanding the timeline helps patients feel prepared. In this article, I outline the stages of penile prosthesis surgery and the recovery phase.
The Surgical Procedure
Performed in a fully equipped operating room under general or spinal anesthesia, a 3-4 cm incision is made at the penoscrotal junction. The cylinders are placed in the corpora cavernosa, the pump in the scrotum, and the reservoir in the lower abdomen. The procedure takes 60-90 minutes.
Postoperative Recovery Timeline
A 1-night hospital stay is standard. Mild swelling and pain are managed with analgesics. Sutures dissolve in 2 weeks. Activating the device and resuming sexual activity are scheduled after a healing period of 4 to 6 weeks.
