Stones that leave the kidney and fall into the ureter cause severe pain. One of the most common questions from our patients is whether moving helps pass the stone. As a rule, staying active facilitates the stone's progress, but this is not applicable for every stone.

Physical Effect of Movement on the Stone

Activities that utilize gravity and body vibration, such as walking, climbing stairs, jumping, or skipping rope, help the stone slide down the ureter. With the help of urine flow, small stones (especially below 5 mm) pass more easily this way.

When to Be Careful?

  • Stone Size Matters: It is difficult for stones above 6 mm to pass spontaneously. In these cases, excessive movement can exacerbate pain.
  • Kidney Swelling (Hydronephrosis): If the stone completely blocks the duct, strenuous movements should be avoided, and medical intervention is required.
  • Drinking plenty of water and using urethral relaxant medications prescribed under doctor control will enhance the effect of movement during this process.
