As one of the significant obstacles to female sexual health and healthy relationships, vaginismus is a medical condition that often goes unspoken despite being common. Vaginismus is the involuntary, reflexive, and uncontrolled contraction of the pelvic floor muscles surrounding the vagina (specifically the pubococcygeus muscle) during an attempted sexual intercourse. This contraction can make sexual intercourse completely impossible or extremely painful. Permanent solutions can be achieved by combining gynecological and urological medical approaches.
What Are the Symptoms of Vaginismus?
The following symptoms are frequently observed in patients experiencing vaginismus:
- Body locking, involuntary closing of the legs, and a panic attack-like fear during intercourse attempts.
- Inability to allow the insertion of a tampon, finger, or gynecological examination instrument (speculum).
- A sensation of "hitting a wall" or extreme narrowing at the vaginal entrance during an attempt.
- Severe burning and tearing sensations during rarely accomplished intercourse.
Clinical Severity Grades of Vaginismus
According to the Lamont classification, vaginismus is divided into four clinical grades ranging from mild to severe:
- Grade 1 (Mild): Mild spasm occurs during intercourse attempts; the patient can allow gynecological examination or intercourse with reassurance and relaxation.
- Grade 2: Marked spasm of pelvic floor muscles is present; the patient tenses during examination or intercourse, but resistance can be overcome.
- Grade 3: Severe spasm occurs. The patient elevates the pelvis, closes the legs, and intercourse is strictly impossible.
- Grade 4 (Severe): The most advanced grade. The patient cannot even lie on the examination table; approaching the genital area causes extreme fear and defense reflexes.
Vaginismus cases at any grade can be successfully treated using proper medical approaches and modern methods.
