Microsurgical varicocele surgery is a comfortable procedure requiring outpatient care or a 1-night hospital stay. The post-operative care process is of great importance to consolidate the success of the surgery and accelerate wound healing. This article provides key recommendations regarding the recovery process and care after varicocele surgery.
First Days After Surgery
There will be a small suture line of approximately 2-3 cm in the groin area. Points to consider during the first days include:
- Rest: Resting at home on the day of surgery and the following 2-3 days, and avoiding sudden movements accelerates wound healing.
- Bathing: Generally, taking a warm shower standing up while protecting the wound area is permitted on the 3rd or 4th day after surgery.
- Pain Control: Prescribed simple painkillers and antibiotics, if any, should be used regularly. Pain is usually minimal.
- Scrotal Support (Suspense): Wearing a suspensory brief or tight underwear for the first 1-2 weeks is recommended to prevent testicular sagging and edema (swelling).
Return to Normal Life and Sexual Activity
Patients can return to desk jobs within 5-7 days. Activities requiring heavy lifting, intense sports, and straining should be avoided for 4 weeks. For sexual intercourse and masturbation, an average recovery period of 3-4 weeks should be expected.
